Traveling to Yemen? Land Connected.

Yemen holds some of the Arab world's most extraordinary heritage — tower-house old towns, terraced highlands and the island of Socotra. Travel here is difficult and, in many areas, unsafe, so any trip needs careful planning, current advice and local contacts before you go.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy use and hotspotting.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Good to know: your phone must support eSIM (dial *#06# and look for an EID), and your 15-digit IMEI is required at checkout so your eSIM can be provisioned.

Travel Highlights

  • Old City of Sana'a: the UNESCO-listed old town of multi-storey tower houses, decorated windows and old souqs — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
  • Shibam: the walled desert town of tall mud-brick tower houses, often called the Manhattan of the desert.
  • Socotra Island: the isolated Indian Ocean island of dragon's blood trees, white beaches and plants found nowhere else on Earth.
  • Zabid: the historic Red Sea-coast town of mosques and old houses, once a centre of Islamic learning.
  • The Haraz Mountains: terraced villages perched on dramatic peaks west of Sana'a, reached by mountain road.

Getting Around

  • Airports: international flights to Yemen are limited and schedules change — Sana'a International Airport (SAH) and Aden International Airport (ADE) have restricted operations, so confirm flights before you travel.
  • Between towns: road travel is slow and, in many areas, unsafe — travel only with trusted local arrangements and current security information.
  • City transport: taxis are the usual way to move within towns where travel is possible; agree the fare before you set off.
  • Socotra: the island is normally reached by air from the mainland or the region, on limited scheduled services — book well ahead and confirm before departure.

Safety and Practical Tips

Yemen is affected by ongoing conflict, and many governments advise against all travel to most or all of the country. Do not travel without checking current official travel advice for your country, and understand that consular help may be very limited.

If travel is undertaken, it should only be with experienced local contacts, a clear security plan and flexible arrangements — roads, flights and services can stop at short notice, and medical care outside the main towns is limited.

Entry and Visa

Visa rules depend on your passport. Most visitors need a visa obtained in advance from a Yemeni embassy or consulate — check the requirements for your passport well before travel, as processing can be slow.

Weather and Climate

  • Climate: varied — hot on the coasts and in the lowlands, milder in the highlands.
  • Coasts and lowlands: hot and humid for much of the year, with summer temperatures often above 35°C.
  • Highlands: Sana'a and the mountain towns are cooler, with mild days and cold nights, especially in winter.
  • Rain: rainfall is low overall; the highlands see most rain in spring and summer, and Socotra has its own monsoon pattern.

Money and Payments

  • Currency: the Yemeni rial (YER). Banknotes are the main means of payment.
  • Cash: cash is essential — cards are rarely accepted, and ATMs may be unavailable or unreliable, so carry enough local currency.
  • Cards: do not rely on cards in Yemen; larger hotels in safer areas may accept them, but this is the exception.
  • Exchange: exchange money only through trusted channels and keep small notes for taxis, markets and small shops.
