Traveling to Suriname? Land Connected.

Suriname is the Caribbean's Dutch-speaking corner of South America — a wooden colonial capital, jungle rivers and one of the world's least-visited rainforests. Install your CGOO eSIM before you fly and you connect the moment you land, so taxi bookings, river trips and restaurant reservations are all handled on your own phone, not on airport Wi-Fi.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy use and hotspotting.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Interior trips: if you are heading into the rainforest, download offline maps before you leave Paramaribo — coverage is strongest in the city and along the coast.

Travel Highlights

  • Paramaribo historic centre: the UNESCO-listed wooden colonial centre and the renewed Waterkant waterfront on the Suriname river.
  • Central Suriname Nature Reserve: a vast protected rainforest in the interior, visited on guided multi-day river trips.
  • Brownsberg Nature Park: rainforest trails and waterfalls overlooking the Brokopondo reservoir, a popular weekend trip from Paramaribo.
  • Commewijne plantations: former sugar and coffee plantations along the Commewijne river, reached by boat from Paramaribo.
  • Upper Suriname river villages: Maroon villages along the river, visited by dugout canoe with local guides.

Getting Around

  • Airports: Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM) serves Paramaribo, about 45 minutes south of the city.
  • Ride-hailing: no international ride-hailing app is widely available in Suriname — rely on hotel-called or rank taxis in Paramaribo, and agree the fare before you set off.
  • Taxis: local taxis are the main way around Paramaribo; fares are generally negotiated rather than metered, so confirm the price first.
  • Interior travel: the interior is reached by small plane, river boat or 4x4 with a guide — do not attempt interior roads or rivers without local arrangements.

Safety and Practical Tips

Suriname is generally calm for travellers, but petty crime is the main risk: watch bags in Paramaribo's centre and markets, and avoid walking alone after dark in unfamiliar areas. Use hotel-called taxis at night.

Interior trips need preparation: take health advice before jungle travel, carry insect repellent and sun protection, and book through established lodges or guides. Tap-to-pay cards and phones are accepted in Paramaribo's larger hotels and restaurants, but carry cash for taxis, markets and the interior.

Entry and Visa

Entry rules depend on your passport: many nationalities, including US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens, are admitted as visitors without a visa for short stays, but always check the current rules for your nationality before you travel, and carry a valid passport plus proof of onward travel.

Weather and Climate

  • Tropical all year: daytime temperatures are broadly around 27–31°C, with high humidity and warm nights.
  • Wet seasons: Suriname has two wetter periods, roughly December to January and April to August, with short, heavy showers.
  • Drier windows: February to March and September to November are usually the driest spells and the most comfortable for travel.
  • Interior: the rainforest is wet at any time of year — pack a rain jacket even in the drier months.

Money and Payments

  • Currency: the Surinamese dollar (SRD) is the local currency; prices are quoted in SRD almost everywhere.
  • Cards: Visa and Mastercard are accepted in Paramaribo's larger hotels and restaurants; a Wise card works wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted.
  • Cash: carry SRD for taxis, markets and the interior, where cards are often not accepted — ATMs are common in Paramaribo.
  • Tipping: tipping is modest — rounding up or 10% in restaurants is normal, and a small tip for guides and drivers is appreciated.
