Traveling to South Africa? Land Connected.

South Africa packs safaris, mountains, winelands and two oceans into one trip — and distances between them are long, so maps, bookings and ride-hailing all depend on data. Install your CGOO eSIM before you fly and you land connected at Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, ready to navigate without hunting for a SIM shop.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy use and hotspotting.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Good to know: your phone must support eSIM (dial *#06# and look for an EID), and your 15-digit IMEI is required at checkout so your eSIM can be provisioned.

Travel Highlights

  • Cape Town: Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Peninsula, with the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek an easy day trip away.
  • Kruger National Park: one of Africa's great safari parks — lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalo, best with a registered guide or a self-drive on the park's tar roads.
  • The Garden Route: the coastal drive from Cape Town toward Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), through Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma.
  • Blyde River Canyon: one of the world's largest green canyons, on the Panorama Route near Kruger, with God's Window and the Three Rondavels.
  • The Drakensberg: high mountain hiking and San rock art in KwaZulu-Natal, a very different South Africa from the coast.

Getting Around

  • Airport to the city: Uber and Bolt both operate at the major airports and in the main cities; use the app pickup points and check the car and driver details before getting in. In Johannesburg, the Gautrain runs from OR Tambo to Sandton and Pretoria.
  • City transport: Cape Town's MyCiTi buses cover the city centre and Atlantic seaboard; Johannesburg and Durban are easier by app ride or rental car than by public bus.
  • Ride-hailing: Uber and Bolt are widely available in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria, and inDrive also operates in the main cities — app rides are the safest way to move around at night.
  • Driving: rental cars are common for the Garden Route and safari regions; South Africa drives on the left, and long rural drives need fuel planning.

Safety and Practical Tips

South Africa's cities have high rates of violent and opportunistic crime: keep valuables out of sight, do not walk alone after dark, and keep car doors locked and windows up in urban traffic, where smash-and-grab theft happens at intersections.

Use app-booked rides or hotel-arranged transport at night rather than flagging down street taxis, and visit townships only with a reputable local guide. Tap water is generally drinkable in the main cities; check locally elsewhere.

Entry and Visa

Entry rules depend on your passport. Citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, European Union countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are visa-free for short tourist stays; other nationalities apply in advance through an embassy or the eVisa system. Carry a passport with at least two blank pages, a return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation or funds.

Weather and Climate

  • Cape Town: warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters — summer days are often in the high 20s Celsius, winter days in the high teens.
  • Johannesburg and Pretoria: highveld summers bring afternoon thunderstorms, winters are dry, sunny and cool at night.
  • Durban and the east coast: subtropical and humid year-round, with summer rain.
  • Safari season: the dry winter months are best for wildlife viewing, as animals gather at waterholes and the bush thins out.

Money and Payments

  • Currency: the South African rand (ZAR). Cards are widely accepted in cities, hotels and safari lodges; carry some cash for markets, rural stops and tips.
  • Wise: a Wise card works wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted; it does not offer a rand balance claim here.
  • ATMs: use machines inside banks or malls rather than isolated street ATMs, and shield your PIN.
  • Tipping: around 10% at restaurants is customary when service is not already included.
