Traveling to Rwanda? Land Connected.

Rwanda is the land of a thousand hills — mountain gorillas, a spotless capital and calm lakes, all in a country smaller than many single national parks elsewhere. Install your CGOO eSIM before you fly and you land connected at Kigali International Airport, ready for maps, bookings and mobile-money payments without hunting for a SIM shop.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy use and hotspotting.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Good to know: your phone must support eSIM (dial *#06# and look for an EID), and your 15-digit IMEI is required at checkout so your eSIM can be provisioned.

Travel Highlights

  • Volcanoes National Park: mountain gorilla trekking in the Virunga mountains — permits are separate, limited and booked well ahead.
  • Kigali Genocide Memorial: the essential, moving introduction to Rwanda's history, in the heart of the capital.
  • Lake Kivu: lakeside towns, boat trips and the Congo Nile Trail for walking and cycling between villages.
  • Nyungwe Forest: Africa's largest protected montane rainforest, with its canopy walk and chimpanzee tracking.
  • Akagera National Park: savannah, lakes and wetlands in the east — lions, elephants and rhinos on a classic safari.

Getting Around

  • Ride-hailing in Kigali: the local Yego app books cabs and moto-taxis in Kigali only, with regulated distance-based fares and cash or Mobile Money payment; VW Move also runs on-demand cars across the capital.
  • Airport to the city: use the official taxi queue at Kigali International Airport or book a Yego cab — agree the fare or confirm it in the app before you set off.
  • Buses: Kigali's city buses run on a Tap&Go smart card (cash is not accepted on board); intercity buses connect the main towns.
  • Moto-taxis: everywhere in Kigali and cheap for short hops — always wear the helmet the driver provides, and agree the fare first for street-hailed bikes.

Safety and Practical Tips

Kigali is one of Africa's safest capitals for visitors, but normal care still applies: keep valuables out of sight, use registered taxis or apps at night, and avoid walking alone in unlit areas after dark. Gorilla trekking has strict rules — follow your guide, keep your distance and never trek without a permit.

Check your own government's advice for the border areas near the Democratic Republic of Congo before planning trips to the far west, and do not photograph military or government installations.

Entry and Visa

Entry rules depend on your passport. Rwanda grants a visa on arrival to all nationalities, and most visitors can also apply online in advance through the official Irembo portal; a combined East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on one visa. Check the current route for your nationality before you travel, and carry a passport valid well beyond your trip.

Weather and Climate

  • Mild highland climate: Kigali sits around 20–27°C by day year-round — pleasantly warm, rarely hot, and cool at night.
  • Long rains (March to May): the wettest months; roads to parks can get muddy and gorilla trails slippery.
  • Long dry season (June to September): the best trekking and safari weather, with clear skies and easier trails.
  • Short rains (October to November): afternoon showers return, followed by a short dry spell around December to February.

Money and Payments

  • Currency: the Rwandan franc (RWF) — cash is still the norm for markets, moto-taxis and small eateries.
  • Cards: accepted in larger hotels and restaurants in Kigali, but rarely outside the capital — do not rely on cards alone.
  • Mobile money: MTN Mobile Money is everywhere and the everyday way Rwandans pay; visitors can pay cash where mobile money is not an option.
  • Wise: works wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted; there is no RWF balance claim here — carry francs for the many cash-only moments.
