Traveling to North Macedonia? Land Connected.

North Macedonia pairs one of Europe's oldest lakes with a lively capital, mountain monasteries and wine country. Data from touchdown makes it easy: maps for the Ohrid old town, bus timetables, and restaurant bookings, all without hunting for a SIM shop on arrival.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy video, navigation and hotspot use.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Good to know: your phone must support eSIM (dial *#06# and look for an EID), and your 15-digit IMEI is required at checkout so your eSIM can be provisioned.

Travel Highlights

  • Lake Ohrid: the lakeside old town, the clifftop Church of St. John at Kaneo, and boat trips to the Bay of Bones museum and St. Naum monastery.
  • Skopje: the Old Bazaar, the Stone Bridge over the Vardar, and the fortress above the city, with day trips to Matka Canyon for boating and hiking.
  • Mavrovo National Park: mountain lakes and trails in the west, and skiing in winter.
  • Bitola and Heraclea: a relaxed southern city with a pedestrian main street, and the Roman ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis nearby.
  • Wine country: the Tikveš region around Kavadarci, with cellar tastings and vineyard views.

Getting Around

  • Airport to the city: Skopje International Airport (SKP) is about 20 km from the centre; buses and taxis are the usual way in. Ohrid Airport (OHD) serves the lake region in season.
  • Buses: buses connect Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola and the main towns, and are the cheapest way to move between them; Ohrid's old town itself is best explored on foot.
  • Ride-hailing — no Uber: Uber does not operate in North Macedonia, and international ride-hailing coverage is unreliable, so do not count on an app. Use licensed taxis — ask your hotel to call one, or use a taxi rank — and check the meter is running before you set off.
  • Driving: if you rent a car, check whether your licence needs an International Driving Permit before you arrive, and expect narrow or winding roads outside the main routes. Full rental details will have their own card later.

Safety and Practical Tips

North Macedonia is generally safe for travelers. The main risks are pickpockets in Skopje's Old Bazaar and on busy buses, and taxi overcharging — use licensed taxis with the meter running, and agree the fare for airport or out-of-town trips in advance.

Cash is still common outside the main cities, so keep some denars for small cafés, markets and rural stops. Summer days are hot, and mountain weather can change quickly — carry water and a light layer for higher ground.

Entry and Visa

Visa rules depend on your passport. Many nationalities can enter North Macedonia visa-free for short stays; others need a visa arranged in advance. North Macedonia is not in the EU or the Schengen area, so its entry rules are separate from its neighbours. Check the latest requirements for your passport before you book, and make sure your passport is valid for your whole trip.

Weather and Climate

  • Continental, with a lake effect: hot summers and cold winters inland, with Ohrid and the south a little milder thanks to the lake and lower latitude. Mountain areas are cooler all year and snowy in winter.
  • Skopje at a glance: January averages around 0°C; July averages around 24°C, with hot days well into the 30s. Rain is spread through the year, with the wettest months in late autumn and spring.
  • Best months: May, June and September are generally the best for sightseeing and lake swimming — warm, with fewer crowds than July and August. July and August are the warmest and busiest at Lake Ohrid. December to March is ski season in Mavrovo and Popova Šapka.
  • What to pack: light clothes and sunscreen in summer, plus a light jacket for evenings and mountain viewpoints. Winter: a warm coat and waterproofs; in the mountains, expect snow and cold.

Money and Payments

  • Currency and cards: Macedonian denars (MKD). Cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and shops in Skopje and Ohrid, but cash is still the norm for small cafés, markets, taxis and rural stops.
  • WISE and similar travel cards: Wise cards work in North Macedonia wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted. Similar multi-currency cards, such as Revolut, work the same way on the Visa/Mastercard network. Check the card app for current ATM limits and fees before you travel, as these change.
  • Tipping: tipping is appreciated but not expected — rounding up, or up to 10% for very good service in restaurants, is the usual pattern.
  • Cash tips: use ATMs in town rather than airport exchange counters, which usually give worse rates, and always choose to pay in denars (local currency) if a terminal or ATM offers to convert to your home currency — that conversion is almost always worse.
