Traveling to Niger? Read This First.

Niger is a vast Saharan country of desert dunes, the Aïr Mountains and the Niger River valley. Read the safety advice below before you travel: many governments advise against all travel to Niger, and conditions can change quickly.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy use and hotspotting.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Good to know: your phone must support eSIM (dial *#06# and look for an EID), and your 15-digit IMEI is required at checkout so your eSIM can be provisioned.

Travel Highlights

  • W National Park: elephants and West African wildlife in the riverine park on the Benin border — visit only with current advice and a trusted operator.
  • Agadez old town: the historic Saharan gateway, its mud-brick old town and the Sultan's palace.
  • Aïr Mountains: dramatic desert peaks and rock art in the far north, reachable only with permission and escort.
  • Kouré giraffes: the last West African giraffes, roaming the bush east of Niamey.
  • Niamey: the capital on the Niger River, with the National Museum and riverside markets.

Getting Around

  • No ride-hailing apps: no international app operates widely in Niger — rely on hotel-arranged cars and private drivers, and agree the fare before you set off.
  • Airport to the city: from Diori Hamani airport in Niamey, use a pre-booked hotel car; avoid unmarked cars at the terminal.
  • City transport: shared taxis run fixed routes in Niamey, and bush taxis link towns — but travel outside the capital needs government permission and a security escort.
  • Road safety: do not travel by road outside Niamey without permission and escort; attacks on major roads are increasing, and rural areas have almost no phone signal, healthcare or fuel.

Safety and Practical Tips

Many governments advise against all travel to Niger, including the capital — the US rates it Level 4: Do Not Travel, citing crime, terrorism and kidnapping, and the UK advises against all travel. Foreign nationals may only travel outside Niamey with government permission and a security escort, and consular help outside the capital is severely limited.

If you travel despite the advice, move only with trusted local contacts, avoid crowds, night travel and border areas, keep a low profile, and carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate, which is mandatory for entry.

Entry and Visa

Entry rules depend on your passport. Most visitors must obtain a visa before travel from a Nigerien diplomatic mission — there is no reliable eVisa and visa on arrival is generally unavailable. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry, and entry rules have changed several times since 2023, so confirm the current requirements with the embassy before booking.

Weather and Climate

  • One of the hottest countries on earth: April and May afternoons often pass 40°C, and the desert north is hotter still.
  • Rainy season (June to September): short rains in the south, with cooler temperatures and dusty roads turned to mud.
  • Dry season (October to May): hot and dry, with the harmattan wind carrying fine Saharan dust from December to February — nights in the desert can turn surprisingly cold.
  • What to pack: light, loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, sun protection, and a warm layer for desert nights.

Money and Payments

  • Currency: the West African CFA franc (XOF) — cash is the default for taxis, markets and transport.
  • Cards: rarely accepted outside a few larger hotels in Niamey — do not rely on a card anywhere in Niger.
  • ATMs: available in Niamey; stock up before leaving the capital, as cash machines are scarce elsewhere.
  • Wise: works wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted — it does not replace the cash you will need day to day.
