Traveling to Kenya? Land Connected.

Kenya is the classic safari country — the Mara, Amboseli's elephants under Kilimanjaro, and a Swahili coast that rewards slowing down. Install your CGOO eSIM before you fly and you connect at Nairobi or Mombasa airport without hunting for a SIM shop, and your own number stays reachable for calls and texts back home.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy use and hotspotting.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Coverage note: coverage is strongest in Nairobi, Mombasa and the main towns and thins fast in parks and rural areas — download offline maps before you head out on safari.

Travel Highlights

  • Maasai Mara: the great migration river crossings, big cats and balloon safaris over the savanna.
  • Amboseli National Park: elephants with Kilimanjaro on the horizon, best at dawn and dusk.
  • Diani Beach: the white-sand Swahili coast south of Mombasa, with snorkelling and dhow trips.
  • Nairobi: Nairobi National Park's lions against the city skyline, plus the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.
  • Lake Nakuru and Tsavo: flamingos and rhinos at Nakuru, and Tsavo's red-earth elephants on the road to the coast.

Getting Around

  • Airports: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) serves Nairobi and Moi International Airport (MBA) serves Mombasa — app-booked rides and hotel cars meet most flights, with a designated ride-share pickup zone at JKIA.
  • Ride-hailing: Uber, Bolt and the Kenyan-born Little Cab all operate in Nairobi, and Uber also operates in Mombasa — fares are shown in the app, but coverage thins fast outside the main cities.
  • Matatus: shared minibuses run set routes across the country and are the cheapest way to travel — ask a local for the right stage and destination.
  • Trains: the standard-gauge railway links Nairobi and Mombasa in about five hours, a relaxed alternative to the highway.

Safety and Practical Tips

Petty crime — pickpocketing and bag-snatching — happens in Nairobi's markets and crowded areas, and some governments advise against travel to border areas, so keep valuables out of sight, use app-booked or hotel cars at night and check your government's advisory before heading near a border.

Medical facilities in Nairobi and Mombasa are reasonable, but outside the main cities they are limited, so carry any medication you need and comprehensive travel insurance; yellow fever vaccination is required if you arrive from an endemic country.

Entry and Visa

Entry rules depend on your passport: since January 2024 Kenya has replaced visas with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) that most visitors must obtain online before travel, as visas are no longer issued on arrival; citizens of East African Community states and many African nationals are exempt. Check the current eTA, passport-validity and onward-travel requirements for your passport before you fly.

Weather and Climate

  • Nairobi and the highlands: mild all year, broadly around 20–26°C by day, cooler at night.
  • Coast (Mombasa, Diani): hot and humid, broadly around 28–31°C, with sea breezes taking the edge off.
  • Long rains: March to May bring the heaviest rain; the short rains fall around October to December.
  • Best window: June to October and January to February are the most popular safari months, with the driest weather and the migration in the Mara.

Money and Payments

  • Currency: the Kenyan shilling (KES) is the official currency.
  • Mobile money: M-Pesa is everywhere for everyday payments — market stalls, matatus and small shops — and ride-hailing apps integrate with it.
  • Cards: cards are accepted at larger hotels, lodges and malls in Nairobi and Mombasa, but cash is still essential for parks, markets and rural stops.
  • Wise: Wise works wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted; there is no local-currency balance claim here.
