Traveling to Guyana? Land Connected.

Guyana is English-speaking South America with a difference — rainforest waterfalls, savannas and a capital of wooden colonial streets — and the interior is reached by small plane and river, so install your CGOO eSIM before you fly and you connect the moment you land, with maps and bookings in your pocket from Georgetown to the falls.

Choose the Plan That Fits Your Trip

  • Fixed data or unlimited: pick from the plan grid above by trip length and data use — fixed-data plans for maps, messaging and light browsing, unlimited plans for heavy use and hotspot.
  • Instant delivery: your QR code and installation link are emailed within minutes of checkout. Install before your flight; validity starts on the day you activate.
  • Good to know: your phone must support eSIM (dial *#06# and look for an EID), and your 15-digit IMEI is required at checkout so your eSIM can be provisioned.

Travel Highlights

  • Kaieteur Falls: one of the world's most powerful single-drop waterfalls, in the rainforest interior — reached by small plane from Georgetown.
  • Georgetown: the wooden colonial capital — St George's Cathedral, the Stabroek Market and the seawall promenade.
  • Rupununi savannas: open grasslands, ranches and wildlife in the south, best visited on organised trips.
  • Iwokrama rainforest: the canopy walkway and wildlife of the protected forest between the coast and the savannas.
  • Essequibo River: river trips and island resorts on Guyana's great river, including the historic Fort Zeelandia.

Getting Around

  • Airports: Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) is the main gateway, about 40 km south of Georgetown; Ogle Airport handles domestic flights to the interior.
  • Ride-hailing — GuyWay, not Uber: Uber does not operate in Guyana — the local GuyWay app books rides in Georgetown, to both airports and along the East Coast, and foreign cards are charged in US dollars.
  • Taxis: otherwise use hotel-called or rank taxis and agree the fare before you set off; unmetered taxis are the norm.
  • Interior travel: the interior is reached by small plane, 4x4 or river boat — book through lodges and tour operators, as schedules are limited.

Safety and Practical Tips

Guyana is generally welcoming to visitors, but take care in Georgetown, especially after dark: use app rides or hotel-called taxis, avoid quiet streets, and keep valuables out of sight.

Interior trips need planning — distances are long, phone signal fades, and medical help is far away — travel with a reputable operator and carry water, sun protection and insect repellent.

Entry and Visa

Guyana's entry rules depend on your passport. Many nationalities enter visa-free for tourism; check the requirements for your passport before you travel.

Weather and Climate

  • Tropical all year: hot and humid, averaging broadly around 27–30°C, with rain possible in any month.
  • Two wet seasons: roughly May to August and November to January are wetter; February to April and September to October are usually drier.
  • What to pack: light breathable clothes, rain gear, insect repellent and sturdy shoes for forest trails.
  • Interior: the rainforest interior is wetter than the coast — guided trips handle the logistics.

Money and Payments

  • Currency: the Guyanese dollar (GYD) is the local currency. Cards are accepted in Georgetown hotels and larger restaurants, but cash dominates outside the capital.
  • Wise and similar travel cards — yes, supported: the Wise card works in Guyana wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted.
  • Cash: carry Guyanese dollars for markets, taxis, small towns and interior trips — many vendors are cash-only.
  • ATMs: ATMs are available in Georgetown; stock up before heading into the interior, where ATMs are scarce.
